Sore muscles are universal. Whether it’s post-exercise soreness, chronic neck tension from desk work, or the deep ache of overexertion, muscle pain is one of the most common reasons people have historically sought out spa treatments. Peat baths for muscle recovery have a long tradition in European spa medicine — and there are good reasons why.

Why peat may help

Heat relaxes muscles. Everyone knows this. But peat delivers heat in a way that ordinary hot baths or heating pads cannot match.

Superior heat retention. Peat holds temperature far longer than water. A peat mixture loses less than 1°C over 20 minutes, while plain hot water drops 3.5°C in the same period (Korhonen 2008). This means the heat reaches deeper muscle layers and stays there long enough to produce genuine relaxation — not just surface warmth that fades before the deep tissue responds.

Active muscle relaxation. Beyond passive heat, peat contains compounds that directly promote muscle relaxation. Fulvic acids and ulmic acids act on α2-adrenergic and D2 dopamine receptors, which control smooth muscle tone (Beer 2000). This is an active biochemical relaxation pathway, not just the passive effect of warmth.

Anti-inflammatory action. Muscle pain often involves localised inflammation — whether from micro-tears after exercise or chronic tension producing inflammatory mediators. Humic acids absorbed through the skin during a peat treatment suppress the inflammatory signals (TNF-α, IL-6) that amplify pain and prolong soreness (anti-inflammatory mechanism).

Mineral delivery. Magnesium, naturally present in peat, is involved in muscle contraction and relaxation. Transdermal mineral delivery during a peat bath or wrap may contribute to the relaxation effect, though this pathway is less well-studied than the thermal and chemical mechanisms.

What the evidence says

The evidence for peat in muscle pain is moderate, drawing mainly from the broader spa medicine and balneotherapy literature.

An RCT by Karaarslan (2022) compared mud-pack therapy plus TENS to hot-pack therapy plus TENS for chronic neck pain. The mud-pack group had significantly better outcomes — indicating that peat adds therapeutic value beyond heat alone. This is consistent with the joint inflammation evidence, where the same study design (peat vs. hot pack) consistently shows peat is superior.

The thermal properties of peat are well-characterised (Korhonen 2008), and the receptor-level muscle relaxation mechanism is documented (Beer 2000). The German Moortherapie tradition has used peat baths for muscle conditions for over a century (Beer 2013).

What’s missing: Dedicated RCTs for peat specifically targeting muscle pain (as opposed to joint or spinal conditions). Most evidence is observational or extrapolated from musculoskeletal studies that include muscle pain as a secondary outcome.

Peat therapy for muscle pain is well-supported by tradition and mechanism, even if the condition-specific clinical trials are limited. For post-exercise recovery or chronic muscle tension, it offers a multi-mechanism approach that goes beyond what simple heat can provide.
