About the Cosmetic Peat Association

The Cosmetic Peat Association is an independent non-profit organisation dedicated to the science of balneological and cosmetic peat. We compile peer-reviewed research, document traditional therapeutic practices, and provide accessible information about peat's role in medicine and skincare.

Balneological peat has been used in European spa medicine for over two centuries — but most of the research is scattered across German, Czech, and Estonian academic literature, unavailable in English. We exist to change that.

Mission

To be the definitive English-language knowledge resource for cosmetic and therapeutic peat — bridging centuries of European spa medicine tradition with modern scientific research.

What we do

  • Maintain a research library of peer-reviewed papers on peat in medicine and cosmetics
  • Document the biological mechanisms behind peat therapy with accessible explanations
  • Catalogue conditions where peat may help — with honest assessment of evidence strength
  • Map the global brands and spas working with cosmetic peat
  • Build a terminology resource for the field

What we are not

We are not a commercial entity. We do not sell peat products or recommend specific brands. We do not give medical advice. Our content is based on published scientific evidence and documented therapeutic traditions. Where the evidence is weak, we say so.

How we work

Every scientific claim on this site is checked against our internal reference layer of peer-reviewed research before publication. Read the details in our Editorial Policy and Scientific Review Policy. Commercial affiliations are disclosed in our Funding & Conflict of Interest policy. Spotted something wrong? See our Corrections Policy.
