When sphagnum moss and other bog plants die and sink into a peat bog, their waxy coatings and cell membrane lipids don’t disappear. They’re modified by thousands of years of slow decomposition, but they retain their hydrophobic (water-repelling) character. In peat, these waxes and lipids serve the same purpose they originally did in the living plant — forming a protective barrier.

What they include

The lipid fraction of peat contains long-chain fatty acids, fatty alcohols, sterols, terpenoids, and wax esters. The exact profile depends on the original plant material: sphagnum-derived peat has a distinct lipid signature compared to sedge or woody peat. At 1–8% of dry mass, lipids are a minor fraction by weight but a significant one functionally.

What they do for skin

Emollient softening. Peat lipids fill the gaps between dry, rough skin cells — softening and smoothing the skin surface. This is one of the three moisturising mechanisms in peat, working alongside the humectant effect of polysaccharides and the occlusive effect of the peat matrix.

Sealing moisture in. The hydrophobic lipid layer creates a temporary occlusive barrier on the skin surface, slowing down transepidermal water loss. In face masks and body wraps, this occlusive effect is most pronounced — the peat stays on the skin long enough for the lipid layer to form.

An interesting correlation. In Estonian peat, the lipid fraction correlates strongly with hymatomelanic acid content (Pearson r=0.93) (Orru 2011). This suggests lipids and HMA travel together in the peat matrix, with HMA potentially acting as carriers for biologically active lipid components — fatty acids, terpenes, and nitrogen-containing compounds. The lipid fraction isn’t just a passive moisturiser; it may be part of an active delivery system.

For dry skin, the lipid fraction is a key part of peat’s appeal. Where conventional moisturisers add synthetic emollients, peat provides a complex natural lipid profile that complements the skin’s own lipid composition.
