Hymatomelanic Acids
Most analyses lump hymatomelanic acids in with humic acids and never mention them separately. That’s a mistake. HMA is a distinct fraction — the part of humic acids that dissolves in ethanol — and it turns out to be both bioactive and unusually well-characterised in Estonian peat.
What it is
When scientists extract humic acids from peat using alkaline solution, the resulting precipitate isn’t uniform. Treat it with ethanol and it separates: the soluble portion is hymatomelanic acid, the insoluble remainder is humic acid proper. HMA molecules are 2–3 times smaller than standard humic acids, giving them greater solubility and potentially better skin penetration (Orrù 2010).
What it does
HMA isn’t just a chemical curiosity. It has demonstrated biological activity:
Receptor activation. HMA fractions act as partial agonists on α2-adrenergic and D2 dopamine receptors (Übner 2013, citing Beer et al. 2000). These are the same receptor pathways that control smooth muscle relaxation — explaining part of the muscle-relaxing and pain-relieving effect observed in peat baths.
Skin permeation. Permeated HMA fractions produce sustained smooth muscle stimulation lasting over 90 minutes (Beer 2003). This confirms that HMA doesn’t just sit on the skin — it crosses the barrier and acts pharmacologically.
Lipid carrier. Lipids in peat correlate almost perfectly with HMA content (Pearson r=0.93), suggesting HMA serves as a natural delivery vehicle for biologically active lipid components — fatty acids, waxes, terpenes, and nitrogen-containing compounds.
The Estonian peat connection
Estonia’s peat deposits have been characterised more thoroughly than almost any others in the world, thanks to systematic surveys by Orrù (2010). HMA was documented in all 7 Estonian peatlands studied, with one deposit standing out at 19.3% HMA by dry weight at 0.70–1.75 m depth — roughly one-third of total humic substances at that site (Orrù 2011).
This level of detailed fraction-level analysis is rare globally. Most peat characterisation stops at “total humic substances” without separating HMA. The Estonian data shows why that’s inadequate — HMA is a significant and bioactive fraction that deserves separate measurement in quality assessment of balneological peat.
