Ulmic acids would be an obscure footnote in peat chemistry if not for one landmark experiment. They are the fraction that proved peat therapy isn’t just about heat — bioactive compounds genuinely cross the skin and act on the body from inside.

The experiment that changed everything

For centuries, sceptics could argue that peat baths work through heat alone. The Beer 2003 study settled the debate.

Researchers took an aqueous peat extract and separated it into 18 distinct fractions using HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography). They placed these fractions on excised human full-thickness skin — not a simplified membrane, but real skin with all its barrier layers intact. Specific ulmic and fulvic acid fractions (numbers 7–11 and 14) crossed the skin barrier and reached the other side.

That alone was significant. But the fractions didn’t just pass through — they produced measurable pharmacological effects on smooth muscle tissue on the other side of the skin.

This is direct proof that the “chemical effect” of peat therapy is real. When you sit in a peat bath, bioactive substances enter your body through the skin and interact with biological targets inside.

What they do once inside

The permeated ulmic/fulvic acid derivatives activate two specific receptor types: α2-adrenergic receptors and D2 dopamine receptors (Beer 2003). Both are involved in smooth muscle control. This receptor-level evidence explains the muscle relaxation and pain relief observed in clinical peat therapy for muscle pain and joint inflammation — it’s not just heat relaxing the muscles, it’s a chemical signal acting on specific receptors.

In context

Ulmic acids are closely related to fulvic acids but show distinct HPLC profiles — they’re low-molecular-weight, water-soluble compounds present in aqueous peat extracts. Their individual biological activity is less studied than humic or fulvic acids, but their role in the Beer 2003 permeation study makes them historically important: they are part of the evidence that peat therapy works through chemistry, not just physics.
