About

Founded in 1882 by local teacher Václav Hucek, who by 1881 had raised the capital to demolish a dance hall he owned and build a spa in its place — naming it “Bertha’s Spa” after his daughter, according to the town archivist. Třeboň’s peat, drawn from local marshland bogs of sedge, reed mace, and reed with iron and sulphur content, was found to be even more effective for musculoskeletal disorders than the peat used in West Bohemia’s spas, and remains the basis of the facility’s treatment programs today.
