A systematic review with meta-analysis is the gold standard in clinical research — it aggregates findings from multiple studies, statistically pools the results, and filters out noise that individual trials cannot. Why Hungary
Hungary has the longest unbroken institutional research tradition in balneotherapy outside of Germany. Lake Hévíz, the world’s largest natural thermal lake, has supported spa medicine there for centuries. Hungarian medical schools have produced a continuous line of balneotherapy research since at least the 1970s. When Bender and Bálint conducted this meta-analysis, they had a large and relatively consistent body of trials to work with — a precondition for reliable pooled analysis.
What It Found
The review finds strong evidence for balneotherapy in musculoskeletal conditions — joint pain, stiffness, and function in osteoarthritis and rheumatic disease are the best-supported outcomes. Evidence for dermatological applications is graded moderate — the trials exist, but they are smaller and less consistent. The distinction matters: “strong” and “moderate” here are formal evidence-grade assessments, not marketing language.
What It Means for This Site
Most individual peat therapy trials are small — 20 to 100 patients, single centers, limited follow-up. A meta-analysis that pools these into consistent conclusions is therefore unusually valuable. When other pages on this site state that balneotherapy has “strong evidence” for joint conditions, Bender 2013 is the methodological basis for that claim.
