Thermal Mud
Mud or sediment naturally heated by geothermal activity or mixed with thermal mineral water. Found at hot springs and thermal lake sites. The thermal component adds heat therapy to the chemical effects of the mud.

Thermal vs. Chemical Effects
Thermal mud research often cannot isolate whether outcomes come from the heat itself or the chemical composition of the mud — both act simultaneously. This is why the Karagulle 2007 RCT design (peloid vs. hot-pack control) matters: it directly compared identical heat delivery with and without peloid chemistry, finding the chemistry contributes independent benefit beyond heat. Peat is used both as a thermal peloid (heated to 38–45°C) and increasingly in non-thermal thin-layer applications where only the chemical mechanism is active.
