Humification
The slow biochemical process by which buried plant material is transformed into humic substances. Humification is the process; the von Post scale is the tool used to measure how far along a given peat sample is.
What Drives It
In a waterlogged, acidic, oxygen-poor mire, normal aerobic decomposition (which would fully break plant matter down to CO₂ and water) cannot proceed. Instead, anaerobic microbial activity and slow chemical oxidation partially break down cellulose, lignin, and other plant polymers, recombining the fragments into new, complex, dark-colored macromolecules — humic acids, fulvic acids, hymatomelanic acids, and humin (collectively humic substances). This is fundamentally different from composting: it is far slower (peat accumulates roughly 1 mm/year) and produces a different class of compound because it happens without oxygen.
Stages
- Fresh plant material (surface, 0–~0.5 m) — recognizable plant structure, minimal humic substance content
- Partial humification (~0.5–2 m) — plant structures breaking down, humic substances beginning to accumulate
- Well-humified peat (2 m+, or shallower in older/faster-humifying deposits) — plant structure largely gone, dark paste-like material with high humic/fulvic acid content
Relevance to Cosmetic Peat
Because the bioactive compounds of interest (humic acids especially) are humification products, not present in fresh plant material, the degree of humification is the single most important quality marker for therapeutic and cosmetic peat. This is why sourcing specifications (Heilmoor, cosmetic-grade peat) universally require a minimum von Post grade (H6+) rather than just “peat” as a category.
