Before antibiotics existed, medics needed antiseptics they could produce in the field. Sphagnol was one answer — a phenolic compound extracted from sphagnum moss and marketed as a wound antiseptic in the early 1900s. It’s no longer produced commercially, but its story connects peat science to one of the most remarkable chapters in military medicine.

The WWI connection

When World War I created catastrophic demand for wound dressings and acute shortages of cotton, military medics across Europe turned to sphagnum moss. It was abundant in bogs near the front lines, held 20 times its dry weight in fluid (far outperforming cotton), and — critically — wounds dressed with sphagnum seemed to resist infection better than those dressed with cotton alone.

Sphagnol was the scientific explanation. Reviewed by Painter (1991), it was identified as the antimicrobial phenolic responsible for sphagnum’s antiseptic properties. Commercial preparations of sphagnol were used as wound disinfectants during and after the war.

Modern context

Sphagnol is no longer manufactured, but the antimicrobial phenolics it represents haven’t gone away — they’re still present in peat, particularly in less decomposed layers closer to the living sphagnum surface. Modern research continues to confirm antimicrobial activity in sphagnum-derived compounds, though today’s analytical chemistry characterises the active molecules more precisely than the crude “sphagnol” preparation ever could.

The story matters because it’s one of the clearest historical validations of peat’s biological activity. When lives depended on finding something that actually worked, medics chose sphagnum — and the science backs up their choice. The connection to modern peat cosmetics is indirect but real: the same family of phenolic compounds that made sphagnol an effective antiseptic contributes to the antimicrobial and wound healing properties of today’s peat-based products.
