About
Moorbad Gmös in Laakirchen, Upper Austria, was founded in 1907, the year its moor deposit received official recognition, and has been owned by the Forstinger family since 1948. It is a privately run outpatient therapy centre; a moor cure there starts with an examination by the spa doctor.
The moor comes from its own deposit, the Gmöser Moor, a 3.4-hectare fen that has been a nature reserve since 1987 and is still cut today. It is used as a natural-moor pack (Naturmoor-Packung): moor at 43–45 °C, or a cooling version, is applied to specific areas of the body, and the patient then rests wrapped in sheets for 45 minutes. Medical massage is offered alongside the packs as a separate treatment. Natural moor is not available in July and August.
