While peat has inherent antimicrobial properties, it is a natural soil-derived material that can harbor microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, and rare pathogens. Cosmetic peat products require microbiological quality control and adequate preservation.

Microbiological Concerns

Sporothrix schenckii: A fungal pathogen found in sphagnum moss and peat that causes sporotrichosis (a skin infection). Primarily a risk for handlers of raw sphagnum, not processed cosmetic peat, but awareness is important for sourcing and processing.

General soil microbiota: Raw peat contains diverse soil bacteria and fungi. Processing (heat treatment, pH adjustment, preservation) reduces microbial load to safe levels for cosmetic use.

Preservation Requirements

EU Cosmetic Regulation requires cosmetic products to meet microbiological quality standards (ISO 17516). Peat products must demonstrate adequate preservation — challenge testing shows the formulation can resist microbial contamination during use. The naturally acidic pH of peat is an advantage here, as it inhibits many common cosmetic spoilage organisms.

Testing Standards

ISO 17516:2014 limits for cosmetic products: total aerobic mesophilic count <1000 CFU/g (face/eye area) or <10,000 CFU/g (body), absence of specified pathogens (P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, C. albicans, E. coli). Peat products should be tested at raw material stage and at finished product stage.
