Heavy Metal Limits
Peat can accumulate heavy metals from atmospheric deposition and groundwater, including lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and chromium. While humic and fulvic acids chelate these metals (reducing their bioavailability), cosmetic peat products must comply with regulatory limits for heavy metal content.
Regulatory Framework
EU Cosmetic Regulation (EC 1223/2009) sets limits for heavy metals in cosmetic products. Peat-based products must demonstrate compliance through batch testing. The chelation of metals by humic acids means that total metal content may be higher than bioavailable metal content — but regulatory limits apply to total content regardless.
Quality Control
Responsible sourcing requires testing of peat source material for heavy metals before use in cosmetic products. Peat from industrial or contaminated sites must be excluded. Sphagnum peat from pristine raised bogs in Nordic countries generally has lower heavy metal content than lowland peat near industrial or agricultural areas.
Testing
Standard methods: ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) for multi-element analysis. Key limits (typical EU cosmetic guidance): lead <10 ppm, cadmium <5 ppm, mercury <1 ppm, arsenic <5 ppm. Specific limits vary by product type and regulatory jurisdiction.
