Study from the University of Latvia (same group as the patent-lv-2015 IP work) published in the International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology, examining both the microbiology of Latvian balneological peat and the effect of sterilization on its hydrophobic organic substance profile. This is one of the few papers addressing the manufacturing challenge in cosmetic peat products: how to make them microbiologically safe for consumer use without destroying what makes them therapeutically active.

The Sterilization Problem

Fresh peat contains an active microbial community — bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that are part of the bog ecosystem. For therapeutic balneology in supervised clinical settings, this is managed through temperature monitoring and single-use or properly sanitised protocols. For commercial cosmetic products with shelf lives of 12–36 months, the microbiological load must be controlled to meet regulatory requirements.

The standard solution is sterilization. But sterilization — heat treatment, UV irradiation, or chemical agents — can alter the hydrophobic organic substance profile of peat, potentially degrading or modifying the bioactive compounds that make it therapeutically valuable. This is the tension the study addresses.

The study characterises the microbial community in Latvian balneological peat and documents how sterilization changes the hydrophobic fraction. The findings quantify the trade-off: sterilization alters the chemical profile, but the degree of alteration depends on the method used. This has direct implications for cosmetic peat formulation: sterilization method choice matters for preserving therapeutic activity.

Significance for Product Development

For any cosmetic brand using peat extract — including those featured on the applications pages — this study raises a practical question: how was the peat processed? Minimally processed whole peat and highly sterilized extracts are different products with potentially different activity profiles. The transparency of processing methods is part of product quality assessment.
