A pivotal paper in the history of peat science. Published in Science of The Total Environment in 1992, Flaig’s review was one of the first English-language scientific papers to connect the specific chemical composition of balneological peat to its therapeutic mechanisms. Before this, peat therapy was practiced widely across Central Europe but justified primarily through tradition and clinical observation rather than chemistry.

What Makes This Paper Different

Most early balneology research described what peat does — patients improved, pain decreased, skin calmed — without explaining why. Flaig’s approach was to start from the chemistry. He characterized not just the major humic substance fractions (humic acids, fulvic acids, hymatomelanic acids) but also the “associated small molecules” — the lower-molecular-weight organic compounds that travel with humic substances in peat extracts. These include phenolic acids, short-chain organic acids, and other bioactive compounds that are often overlooked when researchers focus only on the macromolecular humic fractions.

The Bridge from Chemistry to Clinic

By mapping specific compound classes to specific biological activities — anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, hormonal — Flaig provided the conceptual architecture that later researchers, including Klöcking (2005) and Wollina (2009), built on. The key argument: peat therapy is not magic, and it is not just hot water. It is a complex mixture of biologically active organic molecules that penetrate skin and interact with tissues in measurable ways.

Limitations

This is a review from 1992, drawing on literature from the 1970s and 1980s. The analytical methods for characterizing humic substances have advanced considerably since then. Some of the specific compound identifications and biological attribution in this paper have been refined or corrected by subsequent work. It remains important as a historical reference and for the analytical framework it introduced, not as the final word on peat chemistry.
