Germany has the longest and most established peat therapy tradition, with over 200 years of documented medical use. “Moortherapie” (peat therapy) is an accepted complementary treatment in German rehabilitation medicine, covered by health insurance in spa settings. Major peat therapy centers include Bad Aibling, Bad Neydharting (Austria), and numerous Kurorte across Bavaria and northern Germany.

German peat research produced foundational pharmacological work — Beer et al. demonstrated skin permeation of peat substances (2003) and smooth muscle effects of fulvic/ulmic acids (2000). Klöcking and Helbig’s 2005 review remains a key reference for humic substance medical applications. Quality requirements follow IPS standards (HA >20% dry weight).

Despite the deep clinical tradition, published deposit-level chemical composition data is largely in German-language literature (Eichelsdörfer 1990) and not readily accessible in English. Germany’s strength is clinical application knowledge rather than analytical chemistry data.
