Finland has a relatively recent but growing peat therapy tradition, beginning in the early 1990s. Peat use in connection with the Finnish sauna has become especially popular. Systematic quality characterization was conducted across 23 mires (Korhonen 2008), establishing national standards aligned with Central European criteria.

Finnish peat shows consistent composition across deposit types: humic acid averages 24.8–26.8% dry weight, with fulvic acids at 9.6% for both Sphagnum and Carex types. Thermal retention is excellent — peat mixtures cool less than 1°C in a standard 20-minute treatment period. The same 23-mire dataset was later published as a full peer-reviewed journal article (Korhonen 2012, in the journal Suo), which adds statistically significant correlations between humic acid content and degree of humification (r=0.54–0.69, p<0.02 depending on peat type) — putting Finland’s quality criteria on firmer statistical footing than the original conference proceedings alone.

The Association of Finnish Peat Industries has a dedicated balneological and therapeutic peat section. Quality guidelines require humification H6+ (ideal H8), humic acid >20% dry weight. Peat baths are available at Rokua spa and several other facilities. Cosmetic peat use in beauty parlours and home sauna settings is increasingly common.

A site-specific example illustrates what “balneological grade” looks like in practice: peat from the Lehtosuo mire in Ähtäri reached H8 humification and 28.50% humic acid dry weight — comfortably clearing the threshold (Korhonen 2005). Worth noting, though: a University of Helsinki bacteriostatic test on those same raw samples found no antibacterial efficacy, a caveat on peat’s antimicrobial mechanism that’s specific to untreated Lehtosuo peat rather than a general finding about Finnish peat.
