Estonia has the most thoroughly characterized balneological peat in the world, thanks to a systematic geological survey (Orru 2005) and the first Estonian clinical trial (Orru 2007). Seven peat deposits across the country have been identified as suitable for therapeutic use, with total reserves of 920,000 tonnes.

Estonian peat is notable for exceptionally high humic substance content — up to 60% of organic matter in some deposits, significantly exceeding Finnish averages. The peat is ecologically clean, with all 34 trace elements tested below hazardous thresholds. All suitable deposits are ombrotrophic (rain-fed) raised bogs in natural condition, with peat layers below the bog water table.

Research is led by the Estonian Geological Survey and University of Tartu Pärnu College. Clinical evidence exists for hand osteoarthritis (Orru 2007). No established spa tradition historically, but growing commercial interest in cosmetic and therapeutic applications.
